Pinyin on a writing sheet — when it helps

For children growing up overseas, pinyin is usually the bridge between the spoken word they know and the character they're learning to write. A practice sheet that shows míng tiān right above 明天 lets a child self-check pronunciation while tracing, instead of asking a parent every two minutes. It also quietly reinforces the sound-to-character mapping that makes vocabulary stick.

Hanzi Sheets prints pinyin at two levels: the whole word's reading in the word header (so míng tiān stays one unit), and each model character's own syllable directly above its grid. Both use proper tone marks — mā, má, mǎ, mà — not tone numbers.

…and when to turn it off

Pinyin above every character becomes a crutch if it never goes away. A simple pattern that works: print the first sheet of a word set with pinyin for learning, then re-print the same list with Pronunciation set to "Off" a few days later for testing. Or switch the template to the dictation quiz, where pinyin is the only prompt and the characters have to come from memory.

Data you can trust

Readings come from dictionary-grade data (pypinyin-style annotations cross-checked against word lists), so common pitfalls are handled: 不 changes to second tone before a fourth tone (bú shì), 一 changes tone by context, and neutral-tone syllables in words like 妈妈 (mā ma) and 爸爸 (bà ba) are marked correctly. Single characters with multiple valid readings show the most common one, matching what a primary textbook would teach first.
